2.- Functions
(Last updated: September 2026)
Openchip & Software Technologies, S.L. is a European technology company headquartered in Barcelona. It designs high-performance chips and computer systems for artificial intelligence (AI) and for highly complex scientific and industrial calculations, known as high-performance computing (HPC).
The company handles the entire process: it designs its own chips, develops the software that makes them work, and integrates them into complete systems. Its chips are based on RISC-V, an open architecture — that is, a public standard that anyone can use without depending on third-party licenses.
Openchip takes part in an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) in microelectronics, approved by the European Commission. Within this project, it designs a family of accelerator chips: chips specialized in AI tasks and intensive computing. The project is funded through the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, backed by NextGenerationEU funds from the European Union.
Its goal is for Europe to have its own technology in this field and to help reduce dependence on suppliers from outside the European Union.
